Dan M. Slack is Of Counsel at Block & Leviton LLP, where he advises institutional investors on securities portfolio monitoring, shareholder litigation, and corporate governance matters. Drawing on more than 40 years of experience as a lawyer, public pension executive, and fiduciary, Dan provides clients with practical insight into the governance, investment, and legal issues facing institutional investors.
Before joining Block & Leviton, Dan served as Executive Director of the Fire & Police Pension Association of Colorado (FPPA), where he oversaw approximately $5.5 billion in retirement assets on behalf of Colorado's municipal police officers and firefighters. As the fund's chief executive, he was responsible for investment oversight, governance, strategic planning, and the administration of retirement and disability benefits. His leadership experience gives him firsthand knowledge of the fiduciary obligations, investment challenges, and stewardship responsibilities confronting public pension funds and other institutional investors.
Earlier in his career, Dan served as Executive Director of the State Universities Retirement System of Illinois (SURS), one of the nation's largest public retirement systems. Over the course of nearly two decades with SURS, he held a series of leadership positions, including Executive Director, Associate Executive Director, General Counsel, and outside legal counsel. In those roles, he helped oversee a retirement system managing approximately $14.5 billion in assets and serving more than 180,000 members, while advising on fiduciary governance, investments, benefits administration, and complex legal and regulatory matters.
Dan began his legal career in private practice, where he specialized in pension and retirement law, business law, estate planning, and real estate. He also served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois, including as Director of the Rock Island Regional Office, where he supervised legal operations for a multi-county region and represented the Attorney General's Office in public and media engagements.
Throughout his career, Dan has been an active leader in the institutional investment and pension communities. He served on the Standing Advisory Group of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), was a member and former board member of the National Association of Public Pension Attorneys, and chaired the Investment Committee for the City of Centennial, Colorado. He has also been a frequent speaker at conferences across the United States and internationally on topics including fiduciary duty, institutional investing, corporate governance, risk management, and alternative investments.
Dan is equally committed to nonprofit leadership and environmental stewardship. He currently serves on the World Commission on Environmental Law and has held numerous leadership roles with Leave No Trace, including Board Chair and Treasurer.
